Two letters regarding the Ninth Vermont Infantry Regiment flag, 1927.

Two letter from Stillman Stone to the Adjutant General of Vermont. The first, dated January 5, 1927, written from Lunenburg, Massachusetts, concerns the capture of the flag of the 9th Vermont Infantry Regiment at Harper's Ferry. He states he cut off a piece of the state flag and sent it home. In the second letter, which was also written in 1927 but is undated, he contradicts himself and states that the flag was unharmed. The second letter also contains some biographical information.

Stillman Stone was born on September 20, 1835 in Eden, Vermont, the son of Henry Hutchins and Diana (Richards) Stone. He enlisted in Co. H, 9th Vermont Infantry Regiment on May 29, 1862, and was chosen as first sergeant. He was promoted to second lieutenant in Co. H on March 13, 1863, and to first lieutenant on June 4, 1863.
